چکیده

The Brazilian savanna, locally known as "cerrado", is the most intensely stressed biome with both naturaland human-induced pressures. In this study, we aimed to improve discrimination and characterization of the Brazilian cerrado physiognomies using hyperspectral Hyperion imagery, the first space-borne imaging spectrometer onboard the NASA's Earth Observing-1 (EO-1) platform. A Hyperion image was acquired over the Brasilia National Park (BNP) on July 20, 2001. Various optical measures which took a full advantage of hyperspectral remote sensing were employed and applied to the atmospherically-corrected Hyperion data. These included the 1st-order derivative-based green vegetation index (1st-DGVI), ligno-cellulose absorption index, spectral albedo, and shortwave-infrared (SWIR) spectral unmixing. All these optical measures were correlated well with field-estimates of landscape component cover fractions. Especially, the SWIR spectral unmixing results simultaneously biophysically-characterized and discriminated the cerrado physiognomies. These preliminary analyses showed a great potential of hyperspectral remote sensing in characterizing/discriminating the land covers in the Brazilian cerrado.

Discrimination and Biophysical Characterization of Brazilian Cerrado Physiognomies with Eo-1 Hyperspectral Hyperion

The savanna, typically found in the sub-tropics and seasonal tropics, are the dominant vegetation biome type in the southern hemisphere, covering approximately 45% of the South America. In Brazil, the savanna, locally known as “cerrado,” is the most intensely stressed biome with both natural environmental pressures (e.g., the strong seasonality in weather, extreme soil nutrient impoverishment, ...

Monitoring Forests with Hyperion and ALI

Hyperion, a hyperspectral sensor, and the Advanced Land Imager (ALI) are carried on NASA’s EO-1 satellite. The Evaluation and Validation of EO-1 for Sustainable Development (EVEOSD) is our project supporting the EO-1 mission. With 10% of the world’s forests and the second largest country by area in the world, Canada has a natural requirement for effective monitoring of its forests. Eight test s...

Investigating Alteration Zone Mapping Using EO-1 Hyperion Imagery and Airborne Geophysics Data

Hyperspectral remote sensing records reflectance or emittance data in a large sum of contiguous and narrow spectral bands, and thus has many information in detecting and mapping the mineral zones. On the other hand, the geological and geophysical data gives us some other fruitful information about the physical characteristics of soil and minerals that have been recorded from the surface. ...

Seasonal landscape and spectral vegetation index dynamics in the Brazilian Cerrado: An analysis within the Large-Scale Biosphere–Atmosphere Experiment in Amazônia (LBA)

The Brazilian Cerrado biome comprises a vertically structured mosaic of grassland, shrubland, and woodland physiognomies with distinct phenology patterns. In this study, we investigated the utility of spectral vegetation indices in differentiating these physiognomies and in monitoring their seasonal dynamics. We obtained high spectral resolution reflectances, during the 2000 wet and dry seasons...

Extraction of Karst Rocky Desertification Information from Eo-1 Hyperion Data

Karst rocky desertification is a special kind of land desertification developed under violent human impacts on the vulnerable ecogeo-environment in karst ecosystem. The process of karst rocky desertification results in simultaneous and complex variations of many interrelated soil, rock and vegetation biophysical parameters, rendering it difficult to develop simple and robust remote sensing mapp...
